Review: On Edge (short)         [21:19 ]     #0163

director: frazer lee
cast: doug bradley, charley boorman
brilliant! one of the most pleasant surprises of the festival must have been this 15 minute horror short. shot in gorgeous widescreen panavision and directed by talented newcomer frazer lee, on edge stars cult favorite doug bradley (better known as pinhead from hellraiser) as the dentist from hell: a psychopath who travels past waiting rooms across the country to do some reconstructive surgery on unfortunate patients.
a brilliant performance from bradley (who performs most of his lines in long monologues) and excellent fx by bob keen complement frazer lee's skillful direction. one to watch. tom

Recensie: Jezus is een palestijn         [21:15 ]     #0162

REGIE: Lodewijk Crijns
CAST: Hans Teeuwen, Kim van Kooten, Dijn Blom
goedzozo!

Tom

Recensie: No trains, No planes         [21:13 ]     #0161

REGIE: Jos Stelling
CAST: Dirk van Dijck, Ellen ten Damme, Kees Prins, Katja Schuurman
mag ik even braken?
Jos Stellings No Trains, No Planes is een beschamende vertoning. Tom

Review: American History X         [21:11 ]     #0160

DIRECTOR: Tony Kaye
CAST: Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, Stacey Keach, Ethan Suplee
absolutely fucking brilliant! The Rotterdam film festival with its very best film. American History X is a throat grabbing, breath taking, knockout portrait of a band of American neo-nazis whose leader has returned from prison a changed man. Having sworn off his racist ideologies, Derek (Norton) returns home to find his kid brother trying to emulate him in the worst possible way.
His struggle to save his brother from the influences of his former friends is intertwined with his own history as a skin head and his time in prison. Former photographer Kaye has crafted a stunning film, both beautifully shot and brillinatly written, with amazing performances from the cast (in particular Norton and Keach). Tom

Review: Psycho (surprise film 2)         [21:09 ]     #0159

bad, festivalorganisation, bad Surprise, surprise. The second surprise was the same surprise as the first surprise. Thank god I didn't have to part with my hard earned cash to find out. Tom

Review: Desert Blue         [21:08 ]     #0157

DIRECTOR: Morgan J. Freeman
CAST: Brandon Sexton III, Christina Ricci (again), John Heard, Casey Affleck
mwooooah Likable but ultimately unsatisfying and uninvolving teen comedy about the young inhabitants of a desert ghost town whose only claim to fame is the world's largest ice cream cone. When a truck carrying a possibly material crashes and its contents are spilled, the town is quarantined and the FBI moves in.
At 90 minutes, this takes some major leaps and compromises in terms of storytelling and character development. Intriguing elements like the toxic spill and its connection to a mysterious cola factory are hardly utilised. What remains is a skin deep portrait of a group of kids, sort of a watered down Richard Linklater movie in the desert. Good performances, though. Tom

Review: Last days of disco         [16:38 ]     #0154

DIRECTOR: Whit Stillman
CAST: Chloe Sevigny
did like it though Last days of disco. No trains no plains and a little disco. A not to accurate view on the ending of the disco decade. Styling was way of. The dancing not like it was back then. This movie made Velvet Goldmine the best one in its genre. The presence of CHLOE SEVIGNY however to me made up for a lot of the bad shit.(pp) Paul

Review: American History X         [22:00 ]     #0153

DIRECTOR: Tony Kaye
CAST: Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, Beverly D'Angelo, Jennifer Lien, Stacy Keach, Guy Torry
WE HAVE A WINNER! Oh man, talk about icing on the cake! This was one hell of a surprise movie that took the festivalcake all together. An intelligent movie of epic proportions about right wing extremism in California. From the pictures it's very clear this is a movie made by a photographer and ad director. Everything is composed so clear, so full of detail and so balanced that anyone who watches this is immediately focussed to every second he sees. It doesn't even feel like a two and a half hour ride, because there's not a moment spent in vain. Every part: the story, the music, the dialog, the flashbacks, the colors, the black and white, is exactly where it should be. This is the kind of movie that is so powerful it will make anyone think and maybe even change his mind. The kind of movie I will watch again and again. Joep

Recensie: No Trains, No Planes         [21:46 ]     #0152

DIRECTOR: Jos Stelling
Joep

Review: Fishes in August         [21:39 ]     #0151

DIRECTOR: Yoichiro Takahashi
CAST: Keni Mizuhashi, Ayumi Ito, Ren Osugi
good With every Japanese film I get more and more convinced they are masters at making philosophical cinematic statements. This movie about a pubescent boy in the twilight of maturity finding out about new feelings, situations and relationships the hard way is refined and magical. Excellent. Joep

Review: The Item         [21:30 ]     #0150

DIRECTOR:
CAST:
mmmm The Item is not about the story at all, it's all about the feeling of seedyness and gore in B-film and bad horror, splatter and comic books. It's an over the top magnification of all things gory. In that it succeeds, but it would have been nice if there was some storyline to enjoy instead of only some absurd dialog, a weird sex scene and lots and lots of blood. Joep

Review: Rush Hour         [21:05 ]     #0149

DIRECTOR: Brett Ratner
CAST: Jackie Chan, Chris Tucker, Elizabeth Peña, Mark Rolston
mmmm I know we should be overly excited about a new Jackie Chan movie, since we're named after one of his films, but this just doesn't cut it. The action is excellent and the fighting is carefully orchestrated and fun, but the rest is just total bullshit. A very flimsy storyline and silly casting make it bad. Especially the pairing of Jackie Chan to oddball Chris Tucker, who is merely doing an Eddie Murphy ripoff act. Not good. Joep

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas         [20:15]     #0148

Hubert

Last-day-of-the-festival         [18:25]     #0146

Last night actually, tired fucked up and really pissed because I missed probably "the" film of the festival AMERICAN HISTORY EX. And that just so my girly could get into the final party. The festival, o yes the festival. I truly think it wasn't that great this year but, that's mainly because of the extreme quality of last years movies I saw. Gummo, Gadjo Dillo, Lawn Dogs, Marie Baie des Anges, Who the Hell is Julliete. This year there's only Barrio, and Dis moi que je reve and off course the other "everyone will like them" Festen, and Victor...pendant.... Rests to say, cheers and C U next.... (pp)

How to get your film into the Rotterdam Film Festival         [18:19 ]     #0145

Want to get your film shown in Rotterdam? If this year’s line-up is anything to go by, including one or more of the following elements into your package should get you on next year’s guest list.

  • a hole in the ceiling of someone’s apartment
  • incest
  • drugs
  • someone grossly in debt with a loan shark
  • be a Japanese, French or Russian director (Hong Kong is out of fashion)
  • lots of crumbling tenement buildings
  • suicide (preferably by jumping from a cliff or the top of a high building)
  • get censored in your own country
  • make "real stories" about "real people" (i.e. put a camera on a street corner and presto)
  • hard core porn
