good Interesting mockumentary in the realtv style made with absolutely no budget exploiting new ways of distributing, by satellite dish. The makers actually downloaded the whole film and played it back using a state of the art projector. It looks like this is going to be very promising in the near future for big movie companies as well as independent filmmakers. From the discussion afterwards however it becomes clear that these ideas have yet to cristalize. But as soon as they do they can add new possibilities for the viewer as well as the filmmaker. Good. bad Wow, that was a disappointment. Hong Kong movies, as we all know by now, are usually very entertaining, with a dramatic plot and many actionscenes. This does not any of it, too many flashbacks (three in a row), no good plot to be found and rather lame action. But the horrible music under the 'romantic' scenes was what put me off the most. Joep

Review: Kenoma         [23:32 ]     #0126

DIRECTOR: Eliane Caffé
CAST: José Dumont, Enrique Diaz, Jonas Bloch
mmmmm It was sad to see that the projectionist fucked up by switching two reels so the first hour was absolutely incomprehensible, especially since the way the story is told isn't too clear at first. Guy walk his way to a very small town in the inlands of Brazil and falls in love with a local girl and helps someone build a perpetuum mobile. Interesting story, nicely shot, beautfilly build piece of machinery created especially for the movie, but it still was not convincing. Joep

Review: The Apostle         [23:25 ]     #0124

DIRECTOR: Robert Duvall
CAST: Rovert Duvall, Farrah Fawcett, Miranda Richardson, Todd Allen
great A religious day for me, seeing this after 'A Price above Rubies'. Robert Duvall's film gives a good view on religious life in the bible belt told through his own character E.F. who is voted out of his own church and set's up a new one somewhere else. In no way religion gets ridiculed, neither is it promoting it, but it's touching to see how the community down their deals with religion. Robert Duvall is totally convincing as a reveren and later as a self proclaimed Apostle. Joep

DIRECTOR: Boaz Yakin
CAST: Renee Zellweger, Christopher Eccleston, Glenn Fitzgerald, Allen Payne
good A lot can be expected from Boaz Yakin, because his debut 'Fresh' was an absolute marvel. The second isn't nearly as good but still stands out, it's a relational drama about a woman who discovers she doesn't belong in the society she's been put in, a strongly religious Jewish society. She finds back her freedom step by step. The casting could have been better, but the acting and the story make all worthwile. Joep

DIRECTOR: Don McKellen

mwoooaah It’s New Year’s Eve 1999 and the earth’s about to explode. I think. For some reason we’re all going to die in a few months time and it also won’t be dark at night anymore. Comedy has apparently gone downhill as well. Tom

Review: Dang Bireley’s And The Young Gangsters         [23:19 ]     #0121

DIRECTOR: Nonzee Nimibutr
Brilliant! I don’t believe it! This one’s even better than Crime Kings. A beautifully shot, lit and acted juvenile delinquent Thai crime flick with action to spare. Somewhat reminiscent of John Woo’s Bullet In The Head, this one can hold its own against any HK action movie. Tom

Review: Crime Kings         [23:17 ]     #0120

Excellent Starting the Thai crime programme with The Dumb Die Fast... really gave me the wrong impression. Crime Kings shows the Thai can mount riveting action drama epics like the best of them. From the "indiana Jones meets John Woo" opening to the bloodsoaked finale, it’s action all the way. So if that’s what you’re after, look no further than Crime Kings. Tom

Review: Killer         [23:15 ]     #0119

DIRECTOR: Darezhan Omirbaev
CAST: ...
Total crap God, I’m getting tired of this. Another movie about so-called "real people" and "real life", that’s nothing more than a collection of three minute (and that’s minimum) shots in which absolutely nothing happens. What’s worse, the "actors" in this one are reading their lines up from off-camera cue cards! Don’t get suckered in by the title, because there’s no excitement whatsoever to be found here. Tom

Pretty Good Two kids steal a car, realise it’s been stolen before and used in a murder, leave it, return to it, find the owner, hang it out with her, make a movie and fall in love. Awww... how cute. And fun too. Tom

Goed Ik geef ‘t toe. Tom

mwoah Every prejudice thought about youth and drugs put in a movie to scare the kids and warn the parents. Thou shalt not take drugs or thou willt meet the DEMON. So, it is a bad script. A least fun to look at I think. Paul

terrible One of the retrospective movies of CB. I normally really adore French movies. This one however bored me to death. About a boring summer holliday of a supposed young farmer daughter. It must be said. She did succeed in making it as boring as humanly possible. Yes I did understand the deeper meaning of sexuality and the slaughter of a chicken. Yes I did get the hint on human double morale standards, but no no no I do not like it. Last years Marie baie des anges, or this years dis moi que je reve are my hope for France. Paul

good! Imagine friends the movie without the sitcom, without the laughs, without the shitty humor and with a real story to tell. Just about a boy who looks up to his dying writer friend. Great french girls to make it look good Scratched a little beneath a surface but didn't really get there. Stil it was very much my kinda thing. Paul

very cool When a movie is produced by Kitano Takeshi, it must be okay. Well, it is! About ten men want to kill them selfs, to get rid of their debts by paying them of with insurance money. The way to do it is taking a tour in a bus which gets of the road and falls of a cliff. Lot's of humor and very cool story, Dramatic ending ... or not? Hubert

they should punish these directors to dead fuck fuck fuck, yesterday I told you about lo zio di brooklyn and that is was one of the worst movies I ever saw. Well, this was the fucking sequel. All I can say is that we are all better of if we send the directors to an abandoned island somewhere near the south pole. Hubert

Review: Buffalo 66        [04:53 ]     #0106

Mwoah...

Review: Shark Skin Man etc.        [04:52 ]     #0105

Mwoah...

Review: Jam         [04:51 ]     #0104

DIRECTOR: Chen Yiwen
CAST: Cai Xinghung, June Cai, Li Shangun
Mwoah...

Review: Following         [01:05 ]     #0103

DIRECTOR: Christopher Nolan
CAST: Jeremy Theobald, Alex Haw, Lucy Russel, John Nolan
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Somebody asked after the movie "What's your relation to hitchcock?" And that seems like a weird question, but Christopher Nolan is capable to conjure up that kind of tension in his first feature film. This debut, nade with absolutely no money contains so much great acting, very direct photographing and good storytelling. A great start of a very promising career, now hope for a distributing deal! Joep

Review: Jam         [00:55 ]     #0102

DIRECTOR: Chen Yiwen
CAST: Cai Xinghung, June Cai, Li Shangun
Good! It's a god damn shame that no one in Taiwan is appreciating the movies that are made in their own country, but I guess that is a trend that is happening all over the world. Jam is a good story cut up in four parts, mostly revolving around the car which is stolen to commit a murder. Even though there are a lot of bad guys in this movie, they also get the chance to be human. Good. Joep

Review: Scenery         [00:35 ]     #0101

CAST: Lin Peng, Sun Feng Ying, Zhao Yun Yun
bored Talking about form, this is movie that is almost only about where the camera is, how to zoom in, what square to take. The story is told so slowly, with so much silence, the viewer is almost bored to death. And the viewer is, after six days of festivalling, bored very easily. Joep

Review: Minazuki         [00:15 ]     #0100

DIRECTOR: Mochizuki Rokuro
CAST: Okuda Eiji, Kitaura Kazuki, Yoshimoto Takami, Oginome Keiko
great Last years retrospective of Mochizuki Rokuro left me very impressed, so it's good to see one of his movies premier on this festival. Minazuki is quite rough for the viewer, the sex scenes are disturbing and the violence is even worse, but they are functional for the story (based on a book) he tries to tell. Joep

Review: Mange-Kyo         [00:10 ]     #0099

DIRECTOR: Sento Naomi

not my cup a tea The director of this documentary set out to examine an important task the relation of the photographer to two subjects, both from different background and her relation to the photographer and the subjects. It's a nice experiment to think about, but to see it on film it just isn't interesting. I have to agree, nice girls though. Joep

Review: Flight of the Bee         [00:05 ]     #0098

DIRECTOR: Parzovi Zanbur
CAST: Muhammadjon Shodi, Mastura Ortiq, Tagmoimurod Roziq
Wonderfull! There is a risk involved when going to films from countries in the former soviet union, the people making it are normally too unprofessional and inexperienced in film making. This is not the case for this film which has been made with great care in a country that is still devastated by an ongoing civil war. The talent of Parzovi Zanbur, who can tell a funny and simple story in such a clear way it sometimes even reminds me of Kurosawa, makes it all worthwile. Give this man the recognition he deserves, distribute this movie!!! Joep
