Review: Orphans         [13:48 ]     #0083

DIRECTOR: Peter Mullan
CAST: Douglas Henshall, Gary Lewis, Stephen Cole, Frank Callagher, Alex Norton
AWESOME Alex Cox metioned that he didn't quite understand why actors wanted to be directors. Well, some can go right ahead and continue making films! Like Peter Mullan who was in Braveheart and Trainspotting. This story about three brothers and their empaired sister who mourn about the death of their mother and every single one runs into the trouble the night before the funeral. The fast pace and the everchanging plots of the four keeps the viewer on the edge. The whole film is packed with jokes, but also with strong emotions. It doesn't matter that some of the dialog is almost incomprehensable because of the scottish accent. Great fun! Joep

Review: Black Angel II         [13:46 ]     #0082

DIRECTOR: Ishii Takashi
CAST: Amami Yuki, Yamato Takeshi, Kataoka Reiko
good! This film is almost too stylised. From the first shots onward every camera angle is carefully set most of the shots are made from the ground, the scenes are slow and an atempt is made too be poetic. This movies fails in that, the best scenes are the very violent shootouts and fightscenes, lots of different angles, highly orchestrated. This film is about style and in that it's good. Joep

Review: La sueur des palmiers         [13:42 ]     #0081

DIRECTOR: Radwan El Kashef
CAST: Sherinan, Mohamed Nagati
not my cup of tea Maybe I just don't get this or Egyptian cinema is too alien for me. But this very moralistic story with a lot of religious undertone is just not my cup of tea. It has it's moments and it's good to see some Egyptian culture, but in the end it bored me to death. Joep

Review: Barrio         [13:35 ]     #0080

DIRECTOR: Fernando León de Aranoa
CAST: Crispulo Cabezas, Timy, Eloi Yebra
top! Young boys get bored easily, young boys in the outskirts of the city even easier. That's why in the end they always run into trouble and even turn to crime. The three teens in this Tiger Award offering haven't run into trouble yet, but the way thing progress it soon will happen. This makes for very funny wiseguy dialog, funny situations and some very painful twists. Original story, excellent acting by unknown young actors and beautifully filmed. Joep

Review: Three Businessmen         [13:25 ]     #0080

DIRECTOR: Alex Cox
CAST: Miguel Sandoval, Robert Wisdom, Alex Cox, Isabel Ampudia
good Men on the road are scared, scared of their surroundings, scared of other people, scared of every new situation they get into. And because this happens all the time to businessmen on the road this is a good basis for a funny movie. Alex Cox has pulled this concept into absurdity and letting the two businessmen get lost, very lost, from one city to another, constantly talking about whatever men talk about: gadgets, business, science, nothing, and looking for restaurants. The religious twist at the end is the icing on the cake. Enjoyable. Joep

Review: Victor... pendant qu'il est trop tard         [13:22 ]     #0079

DIRECTOR: Sandrinne Veysset
CAST: Jérémy Chaix, Lydia Andrei, Mathieu Lané, Skan Guenin
beautiful I've said it before, I'll say it again, this movie already has won the Tiger Award if I had my say in it. It's the first movie in the festival which gave me chills down the spine. A little boy runs away from home and finds refuge with a hooker who has a comparable sexually abused childhood as the boy, they become good friends. Every single person in the movie is acting excellently especially the little boy and hooker played by Lydia Andrei. The rough and dark photographing make it even more touching. Joep

Review: Touch of Evil         [13:18 ]     #0078

DIRECTOR: Orson Welles
CAST: Orson Welles, Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Marlene Dietrich
good Halfway through the movie Marlene Dietrich sums it up, almost, by saying: "It's so old it's new". Sadly it's not and even making a directors cut out of the memo Orson wrote after the studio had butchered one of his masterpieces. Let's face it's old, so the actors act too much, talk too much and it takes a while till the story picks up. The photographing is excellent though and you should definitly see it for the opening sequence alone, which is truly amazing. Joep

Review: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas         [13:18 ]     #0077

oh man Oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man, oh man. Review: Psycho (suprisemovie #1)         [13:15 ]     #0076

DIRECTOR: Gus Van Sant
CAST: Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche, Julianne Moore, Viggo Mortensen
mediocre When Universal announced plans to remake Psycho, the big question on everybody's lips was: why? Now that I've seen the film, I still ask the same question. It's a shot for shot, word for word (though I'm quite sure the line "Let me get my walkman" wasn't in the original) copy. Even the set and costume design has been kept as early sixties as possible (even though it's set in the present). To all intents and purposes, this is just a big gimmick. A novelty act. And if that's what film means to you (it clearly did to Van Sant and co), go have a look. I hear they're remaking Psycho 2 next. Tom

Review: Velvet Goldmine         [13:10 ]     #0075

DIRECTOR: Todd Haynes
CAST: Ewan McGregor, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Toni Colette, Eddie Izzard
mediocre You've probably read what this hyped-up movie is about a million times already, so I won;t bore you with plot lines. Suffice it to say I'm a huge fan of both David Bowie and Iggy Pop and I still thought the movie was uninvolving. The framework story of reporter Christian Bale and his growing up during the glam era is meant to add depth (come on, it's about glam rock for chrissakes), but only serves to make this movie more disjointed.
All applause must go to Ewan McGregor for his absolutely spot-on imitation of Iggy Pop, though. Tom

Review: Rushmore         [13:07 ]     #0074

DIRECTOR: Wes Anderson
CAST: Jason Schwartzman, BIll Murray, Olivia Williams, Seymour Cassel
EXCELLENT! Who'd have thought: a Bill Murray comedy playing at the Rotterdam Film Festival. An oddball (by Hollywood standards) look at the high school career of a young overachiever and his romantic entanglements (or so he thinks) with pretty English teacher Williams. Murray, as the millionaire father of two of his classmates, serves as both his friend and rival for the teacher's affections.
Wonderfully defined, multi-layered characters give these actors a movie to sink their teeth into. Which is what you should as well. Tom

Review: Lola Rennt         [13:05 ]     #0073

DIRECTOR: Tom Tykwer
CAST: Franka Potente, Moritz Bleibtreu
okay Hip, speedy, thumping "what if" story, exploring three possibilities of the same event. Small time hood Bleibtreu accidentally leaves a bag of money behind on the subway. Problem number 1: the money was meant for his boss. Problem number 2: he's meant to deliver it in twenty minutes or else... He decides to ask his girlfriend Lola for help and so the story starts. A barrel load of funky visual show-offery seems pointless at first, but they merge with other stylistic touches (music, writing, characters) to form a unified and totally engrossing whole. Tom

Review: La expresión del deseo         [09:30 ]     #0072

DIRECTOR: Adrián Caetano
CAST: Pablo Castello, Roberto Merlo, Jorge Sesán, Hector Anglada, Guillermo Perez
okay Not very special, but nicely shot movie about two gangs in Cordoba, Argentina's second largest city. It's only 15 minutes and that's exactly the length it should be. Hubert

Review: Midnight         [09:30 ]     #0071

DIRECTOR: Walter Salles, Daniela Thomas
CAST: Fernando Torres, Luis Carlos Vasconcelos, Mateus Nachtergaele, Nelson Sargento, Carlos Vereza
great Another 'fin de sičcle' movie, but this time in Brazil. Murderer escapes prison to kill a friend and rescues a woman who wants to kil herself because her boy friend left. Very cool pictures on Rio de Janero and it's poor barrio's. Hubert

Review: L' albero delle pere         [09:15 ]     #0070

DIRECTOR: Francesca Archibugi
CAST: Valeria Golino, Sergio Rubini, Stefano Dionisi, Niccolo Senni, Francesca Di Giovanni
beautiful Beautiful Valeria Golino is a drug addicted mother of a 14 years old boy who has to raise himself and his sister, together with his two dads. Nice story line and good acting. Hubert

Review: Tropicola         [09:15 ]     #0069

DIRECTOR: Steve Fagin
CAST: Adria Santana, Mario Balmaseda, Tito Junco
horrible This was just such a bad movie, it's hard for me to say anything about it. This director started with a ten minutes talk about it before it even started. the actors where bad, the acting was terrible, the video quality (VHS??) was horrible and it had only one message: "Cuba is good, World is bad" Hubert

Review: B-Monkey         [00:30 ]     #0066

DIRECTOR: Michael Radford
CAST: Asia Argento, Jared Harris, Rupert Everett, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Tim Woodward, Ian Hart
fun Very funny thriller about a girl who meets a boy, but their lives are totally different from each other. It's not a very special story, but it's just a funny and entertaining movie, take some extra time to check B's tattoo's! I really would like to check them some closer ;-) Hubert

Review: Last Night         [00:30 ]     #0065

DIRECTOR: Don McKellar
CAST: Don McKellar, Sandra Oh, Callum Keith Rennie, Sarah Polley, David Cronenberg, Genevičve Bujold
okay Canadian Fin de Siecle movie about people spending their last hours on this world because it's going to be destroyed by an Asteroid (very original...) Nicely shot pictures, but a little bit boring. I saw lot's of stars who also appeared in Exotica, which I liked much more. Still worthwhile seeing. There was one very bad thing about this movie: they way this really cool Ford Pinto get's fucked up. Man that's a cool car. The first person I see fucking up a Pinto in real life can get a foot up the butt. Hubert
