Review: Max & Bobo         [16:45 ]     #0059

DIRECTOR: Frédéric Fonteyne
CAST: Alfredo Pea, Jan Hammenecker
top! Midnight Cowboy must have been the last time I saw a touching film about two fuck ups, about two losers spat out by their environment and completely clueless about their next step to survive. Dispair will pair the strangest people and will make them do horrible things. This film shows this better than most others. Joep

Review: Rushmore         [16:40 ]     #0058

DIRECTOR: Wes Anderson
CAST: Jason Swartchman, Bill Murray, Olivia Williams
top! Wes Anderson is a director who can make offbeat movies with much deadpan humor and hard to predict storylines and Rushmore must be one of his best. This story about an allround organizing nerdy kid who becomes friends with the local beneficiary (played by Bill Murray) and falls in love with a teacher who falls in with the beneficiary and the nerdy tries everything in his power to win her back, is original and keeps the viewer unknowing of what comes next. And that is pretty amazing for a film that falls into the highschool comedy genre. Joep

Review: Fetch/Fresh Air         [16:30 ]     #0057

DIRECTOR: Lynn-Maree Danzey/Neil Mansfield
CAST: Matt Day, Rebecca Frith, Mindy/Nadine Garner, Bridie Carter, Marin Mimica
Good! Screenings of Fresh Air open with the excellent short Fetch which is more effective in three minutes than most are in ninety.
Fresh Air is a window onto the world of three young Australian. It's so loose in structure and storyline that this film almost resembles the indiefanzine which one of the characters is making. A collection of snippets visual wisecracks, music and offbeat dialog. It becomes very clear where the original ideas you see in so many Australian movies come from. Joep

CAST: Amphon Lumpoon, Dorn hetrakul, Supakorn Kijsuwan
AWESOME! One of the themes of this filmfestival is the Thai crimefilm, rumour had these can be as good as any actionmovie from Hong Kong om Japan. The rumour is true, the actionscenes in this story about a Robin Hood figure who steal from the rich and gives to the poor, situated in sixties Thailand contains so many excellent actionscenes that even remind me of the work of Sam Peckinpah. Squirting blood everywhere, big explosions, many camerangles and very fast editing. Bloody amazing. Hope to see more like this. Joep

Review: A Simple Plan         [16:15 ]     #0055

DIRECTOR: Sam Raimi
CAST: Bill Paxton, Billy Bob Thornton, Bridget Fonda, Gary Cole
okayish So for some reason they decided to seize the opportunity and use the festival to promote this film to European audiences. Good idea to send Bridget Fonda in, but there's nothing she does in this movie any other good looking girl could have done. It's just not a strong enough movie for that. But for a thriller, it's original enough. Joep

DIRECTOR: Hal Hartley
CAST: Thomas Jay Ryan, James Urbaniak, Parker Posey, Kevin Corrigan, Miho Nikaido, Chuck Montgomery
good!! It took my breath away for the first 50 minutes, then it weakened a bit but it's my thing, sure. Really strong shots throughout the whole movie. A garbage man turned in to a prise winning autor by a to timing conaisseur of writing. Genius is allways there to be recognised! Paul

Review: Another day in Paradise         [13:45 ]     #0052

DIRECTOR: Larry Clark
CAST: James Woods, melanie Griffith, Vincent Kartheiser, Natasha Gregson Wagner
good!! No kids, roadish movie with direct view on Melany Griffiths innerlegg. I guess there's no message in this one, just enjoy a pretty hard movie. Fits in with a lot off the IFFR, drama the right way. Paul

CAST: Críspulo Cabezas, Timy, Eloi Yebra, Marueta Orozco, Alicia Sánchez, Enrique Villén, Francisco Algora
Beautiful A beautiful movie about three boys living in one of the worst neighborehoods (barrio) in Madrid. No one overthere has money and it is very hard to have a living in 'El Barrio'. the three boys also have trouble getting around. Great soundtrack. Hubert

Never buy a white rat Saturday was just on of those days where all the movies I saw where brilliant and Sitcom was one of them. On the eye a very normal and wealthy family, till dad comes home with a pet rat. First the son touches the rat and becomes gay (the son), than the daughter touches it, gets suicidal tendencies and becomes a SM master. Mum touches the rat and wants sex with her son and on it goes. Lot's of fun and one very clear message: "NEVER BUY A WHITE RAT!" Hubert

DIRECTOR: Nanni Moretti
CAST: Nanni Moretti, Sylvia Nono, Andrea Molaioli
okay Nanni Moretti does it again, a wonderful, funny and politically very interesting movie. It's not as good as Caro Diario was. Turning point of the movie is almost at the end of it, when a friend of Nanni tells him how much time he has left for his life. This point could have been done earlier in the movie, but hey... Nanni takes his Vespa and all troubles are over. Hubert

DIRECTOR: Manop Udomdej
CAST: Sorasak Wongthai, Aungkana Timdee, Khachonsak Ratananidsai
thumbs down! This Thai crime movie starts out promising, but fails to deliver. Though incorporating all the elements of the classic American film noir, the film nevertheless falls flat as the first five minutes are better than the 120 that follow. A talky, convoluted script and above all horrendous overlength bury any chance of enjoyment. And I won't even mention the ridiculous ending. Tom Tom

Review: Bullet Ballet         [01:30 ]     #0036

DIRECTOR: Shinya Tsukamoto
CAST: Shinya Tsukamoto, Mano Kirina, Nakamura Tetsuya
thumbs up! It's everyman versus the evils of city life. Japanese über-stylist Tsukamoto employs his usual themes to deliver a thumping techno version of Scorsese's Taxi Driver. Deliriously violent, hallucinatory and sometimes headache-inducing (due to shaky handhelds and rapid-fire editing), but above all an overwhelming audiovisual experience. Tom
