A fond farewell to Joe D'Amato
Het filmfestival is nog niet eens begonnen en wij gaan al van start. Wij staan
al weken te popelen om tien dagen dag en nacht in de weer te zijn. Films
ademen, eten, drinken, dromen, bestaat er iets beters voor de filmfanaat dan
een filmfestival. Omdat wij als filmfanaten graag op de feiten vooruit lopen
openen we dit katern van de site met een rijtje recensies van films die we al
gezien hebben. Zo heb je alvast een goed idee van wat je wel en niet moet zien
op het filmfestival. Hoewel, je moet natuurlijk zelf uitmaken of je op de
mening van onze recensist af kan gaan.

Terwijl de heren uit het Maasstadse liepen te dolen of te dansen of te drinken of te sjansen hield in het Utrechtse stadje U. iemand voor hen bij of ze bij Het Journaal of Stardust nog op de televisie te zien waren. Heren, zijt gerust: neen.
Stardust, dagelijks te zien met een filmfestival-dagoverzicht van een kwartier, vond het niet nodig in te gaan op de bezoekers, doch zocht drie films en filmmakers uit. De Openingsfilm met maar weer eens een interview met Christine Hakum, Fear and loathing in Las Vegas waarbij de verguisde Terry Gilliam mocht vertellen waarom hij Johnny Depp invulde als Johnny Dope ('Nobody knows anymore what to do these days') en waarom hij zo enorm snel heeft 'gesneden'. Tenslotte mocht ook een kunstzinnige film weer een paar minuten tijd opsoupperen. Donigan Cumming maakte Erratic Angel en ik kan niet zeggen dat ik nu als een dolle naar het new wave programma toe zal gaan. Ik heb zelf wel vreemde vrienden.
Een vluchtige blik op de Volkskrant hedenochtend leert dat Peter van Bueren mij schaart onder de glamourzoekers (ik moet Kim van Kooten vinden). Verder geeft hij maar alvast alle recenties die hij in de media heeft kunnen vinden. Voor uitgebreidere dient u echter deze survival guide te benutten.

Een eenmaal geopend festival moet nog verder worden geopend met een openingsfeest. Dat staat zo in de regels. Maar wat is een openingsfeest?
Op een openingsfeest geeft Moniek van de V., bekend van de hilarische TV-serie Spangen haar jas af in de garderobe om 10:48, onderwijl prevelend: kent u mij, van de legendarische TV-serie Spangen?, en verlaat voormalig internet-goeroe ~fvjole om 01:29 in gezelschap van drie personen het pand, op zoek naar de parkeergarage, onderwijl prevelend: had ik maar een web-cam op het hoofd...
Gedanst werd er in de kleine zaal, in blokjes van d&b, reggae en ska, house en onvervalste disco.
Du moment dat Fukkin' for Jamaica werd gedraaid verliet ik het pand. Ik heb twee geile wijven gezien en dronk drie bier. kolonel
Openingsfilm: Leaf On A Pillow [05:01 ] #0008

Een festival moet geopend worden met een openingsfilm. Dat staat zo in de regels. Maar wat is een openingsfilm?
Leave On A Pillow is zo plat als een dubbeltje. Een handvol mooie beelden, een gebrekkig scenario en echte straatkinderen met piercings in beeld rechtvaardigen absoluut niet de keuze voor deze openingsfilm. (Nee, maar de naam Simon Fields stond wel in de aftiteling...) kolonel
Review: Rush Hour [-4:55 ] #0007
DIRECTOR: Brett Ratner
CAST: Jackie Chan, Chris Tucker, Elizabeth Peņa, Mark Rolston
Jackie Chan returns to Hollywood and finally conquers it. Despite a series of
bitter disappointments in the eighties (most noticably The Protector),
Jackie's wish to conquer the western market has always remained. And now he's
finally nailed it.
Rush Hour mixes the Jackie Chan formula with a typical Hollywood buddy cop
story and comes up with highly entertaining results, thanks not in the least
to the on-screen chemistry between Jackie and Chris Tucker.
It's without doubt the most mainstream and commercial film of the festival,
but I'll bet you people will flock to it in droves. Tremendous fun.

Review: Leaf On A Pillow [-12:00 ] #0005
DIRECTOR: Garin Nugroho
CAST: Christine Hakim, Sugeng, Heru, Kabri Wali
Gritty look at the lives of street children in Jogyakarta, Indonesia. The most amazing thing about this film is that the cast is made up entirely of actual street children, performing under the wing of veteran Indonesian actress Christine Hakim. It's honest, it's technically competent, it's very well acted, but sadly it's also terribly formulaic. The plot synopsis says it all, really.

Okay okay, so the ants in this computergenerated movie do not have the right
number of feet. And just like Antz this still very much looks like a
computer generated movie and things don't seem to have improved that much
since Pixar's big hit Toy Story. But this is a very funny
movie, with a good story, some nice characters and a lot of excellent wise
cracks in visuals as well as dialog and story. Good one, looking forward to
Toy Story 2.

CAST: Ewan McGregor, Jonathan Rhys-Meyer, Toni Colette, Christian Bale, Eddie Izzard, Emily Woof, Michael Feast
The Glam rock era was as fake as fake can get. All that glitter all the
nailpolish, eyeliner and lipgloss. But should you fake your way through making
a movie about that era? Todd Haynes certainly thought so. Over and over it has
been stressed that this movie is not about David Bowie and his alledged
relationship with Iggy Pop. Still it's rather strange to deny that and see
Ewan McGowan looking like a spitting image of Iggy Pop, with a whiff Kurt
Cobain especially in the name Kurt Wild, doing some excellent Stooges covers.
Jonathan Rhys-Meyer hasn't got a hard time looking like Ziggy Stardust either,
but he has to sing songs by other artists from the era. Fake as fake goes is
superficial and on second viewing rather boring. If you hate glam,
avoid it like the plague.

American media reacted either with disbelief or were too unsure to react at
all. That's why Todd Solondz' second movie probably hasn't had the proper
attention it should have had. What this movie will do to European audiences is
left to be seen. My guess is it will shock people as much as it did in the
States, because everything, though depicted in a very dry comedy style, is so
recognizable. The fact you in the end actually feel sorry for the child raping
dad, or the sexually fantasizing freak next door makes it such a good movie.
It provokes strong emotions and leaves you unsure and you still think you have
had a good laugh when you leave the cinema. Excellent.
