	Regie/Director: Ringo Lam Met/Starring: Chow Yun Fat, Cherie Chung, Roy Cheung 1989 Label: Made In Hong Kong (UK) 95 min. Wild Search is duidelijk een film uit Ringo Lams pre-Full Contact periode. Hoewel het verhaal een actiefilm doet vermoeden is de uitwerking er een die vooral gebaseerd op personages en hun onderlinge relaties. Wild Search zou dan ook probleemloos aangeduid kunnen worden als het jongere broertje van City On Fire. Met één verschil. Wild Search is beter. Chow Yun Fat, als altijd innemend en charismatisch, speelt politie-agent Mew Mew (echt waar). Als Mew Mew en zijn collega's een wapendeal wil verijdelen, wordt een van de verdachten gedood. De dame in kwestie blijkt een jong dochtertje te hebben (genaamd Ka Ka; dat ze het goed met Mew Mew kan vinden is dan ook geen verassing), dat nu als wees op de wereld staat. Mew Mew zoekt de familie van de (door haar collega, zo blijkt) vermoorde vrouw op in de New Territories, het plattelandsgebied in het noorden van Hong Kong. Haar zus Chei neemt de zorg voor het meisje op zich en vanaf dat moment is duidelijk dat Mew Mew, Chei en Ka Ka onvermijdelijk op een model 'hoeksteen van de samenleving' afstevenen. Ondertussen zitten de wapenhandelaars ook niet stil. De leider van de groep is de zakenman Hung, die zich graag voordoet als sociaal bewogen mens. Als Mew Mew Hung confronteert met het feit hij de biologische vader van Ka Ka is spat die facade uiteen. De constante pesterijen van Mew Mew, die inmiddels weet van Hungs betrokkenheid, doet Hung terugslaan. Hij stuurt Bullet, de oorspronkelijke partner, en dus de moordenaar, van Ka Ka's moeder achter Mew Mew aan. De ware kracht van Wild Search ligt niet in de actie of het politie-versus-criminelen-plot. De kracht van Wild Search schuilt in het drama. De personages in deze film zijn mensen, geen karikaturen. De scene waarin Chow en zijn collega Chei helpen bij een verhuizing is wat dat betreft illustratief. Een filmmaker die een dergelijke simpele, maar o zo treffende scene in een actiefilm durft op te nemen heeft lef. Tom Mes

	Wild Search is in many ways the perfect companion piece to Ringo Lam's classic City On Fire. Both are similar in style and execution, and both put heavy emphasis on character development. There is however one difference between the two films: Wild Search is better. Chow Yun Fat (oozing charm and charisma as always) plays a cop with the unlikely name of Mew Mew. He is involved in cracking an arms dealing case, but things take a turn when one of the suspects, a young woman, gets killed during a raid. In turns out that she was the mother of a little girl called Ka Ka (with that name, it's no surprise that she and Mew Mew get along well). Mew Mew tracks down the girl's aunt Chei, who lives with her father in the New Territories, the rural northern part of Hong Kong. As soon as they meet it's clear that Mew Mew, Chei, and Ka Ka are a family waiting to happen. His affection for the little girl (and her surrogate mother) strengthen Mew Mew's determination to crack the case. He finds the mastermind behind the gunrunning racket, a coke-snorting business man named Hung, who tries to pass himself off as a generous philantropist. This facade crumbles as soon as Mew Mew confronts him with the fact that Hung is actually Ka Ka's biological father. Hung in turn encourages a thug named Bullet, the original partner, and also murderer, of Ka Ka's mother, to punish Mew Mew for his constant pestering. This story makes Wild Search sound like a fairly entertaining, though unexceptional, action film. However, this film's true power lies in its dramatic scenes. Character development is the name of the game here: the characters in Wild Search are three-dimensional human beings. A great example of this is the scene in which Chow and his colleague, played by Ringo Lam regular Tommy Wong, help Chei move some of her sister's furniture. A director who has the guts to put a scene of such beautiful simplicity in an action movie and manages to not make it stick out like a sore thumb is a man of great, great talent. Action and drama come in perfectly balanced doses here, but its dramatic content is what makes Wild Search shine. Tom Mes
